In 1931, Bell married actress Clara Bow. They had two sons: George Beldam Jr. and Tony Beldam, who later went by Rex Anthony Bell Jr. In the roles of ‘Shotgun Rex’ in Stage to Thunder Rock (1964) and Young Fury (1965), Rex Bell Jr. made appearances in two Western films. From 1987 to 1995, he also held the position of district attorney for Clark County.

On July 4, 1962, Bell suffered a heart attack and passed away shortly after going to a political gathering and picnic in Las Vegas.

Film Career:

Bell made his motion picture debut in 1928’s Wild West Romance, and he went on to star in a number of films, usually Westerns, in which he played the major character. According to rumors, Fox Film officials were preparing Bell to succeed Tom Mix. Although he had only minor roles in a few following films, he departed the film business in 1936.

Bell established the Walking Box Ranch near Searchlight, Nevada, together with his wife, the actress Clara Bow.

In John Huston’s The Misfits (1961), which starred Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, he made his final film appearance in an uncredited but major part as a chatty old cowboy at a pub and attending a rodeo.

Berkeley Bunker, a Democrat, was Bell’s opponent when he ran for the US House of Representatives in 1944 on the Republican ticket. On November 1, the Nevada State Journal said, “He has made friends wherever he appeared, but the consensus is that the time is too short to overcome the disadvantage of being less well-known than his rival. Bunker received 36,648 votes, while Bell received 19,096. The election was place on November 7.

Bell, the head of the Nevada Republican Party, served as a delegate to the 1948 Republican National Convention as an alternative. Additionally, he was involved with the Boy Scouts and the Nevada Chamber of Commerce.

Bell gained connections during those years that aided him in 1954 when he ran for Lieutenant Governor. Charles H. Russell, the Republican governor in office at the time, also prevailed in that election. Russell was deposed by Democrat Grant Sawyer in 1958, but Bell was re-elected as Lieutenant Governor (John D. MacDonald’s 1960 book The Only Girl in the Game makes reference to Bell and his political status in the state of Nevada). Bell passed away from a heart attack on July 4, 1962, at the El Rancho Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, while still serving as gubernatorial candidate and making a campaign address.


Rexco, Incorporated, which produced and sold novelty gifts, was run by Bell. In Nevada, he and his brother ran two clothing businesses as well.
